Hastings Webcams

Over the years, various webcams have been set up with radio links. Here are some highlights. If you don't have Quicktime to view the movies, download free Quicktime viewer, install it and enjoy.

Grass Cam

In 2003, we installed a camera to look down on an individual of the elegant official State Grass of California, Purple Needlegrass (Nassella pulchra). We took a photo once a day (noon) and compiled these into a movie. We did this for three years; a dry year, a wetter year (mostly winter rains) and a dry winter with a long, wet spring. These movies can be downloaded below. They all show the progress of California's hot dry season, the cool wet winter when the dead grass and plants decompose into the soil, and the riot of growth in the spring when the soil gets warm enough to support fast growth. Then things lapse back into the heat of summer. A small metal reference card with red and white squares (1") is included in the movies for scale.
