Field Station Activities, Planning and Development Projects, and Other National Scientific Programs:

The Hastings Natural History Reservation is a remote coastal range valley and ridge research and teaching facility in the Santa Lucia mountains in central, coastal California. Hastings was established in 1937 as a field station of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, of the University of California, Berkeley for advanced research and teaching in field biology. As Resident Reserve Director, I coordinate all the research on the reserve, manage the facility maintenance, developed, administer and maintain the reserve’s computer network, serve as data manager and web manager, plan long-term projects, host visiting groups, represent the reserve to local and regional organizations and government agencies, represent the reserve in national and regional organization (e. g. CalEON, California Biodiversity Center, Organization of Biological Field Stations, UC Natural Reserve System, etc.), oversee reserve safety and animal care issues, and co-PI grants to the reserve.

Major National Activities Over the Past Five Years
Network Coordinator and Website Manager; Organization of Biological Field Stations (OBFS, 1995-2005). Initiated the OBFS website, and have managed the development of the website to include databases for membership information, advertising positions at field stations, information on each field station. Served on OBFS committees to develop operations manual for field stations, long-range plans, data and information management plans, and strategic planning. Implemented ecological metadata catalog developed as Core Network Investigator of the NSF-funded RCN project, “Resource Discovery Initiative for Field Stations” (RDIFS). Worked to implement the ecological metadata catalog in the UC Natural Reserve System, OBFS and Ecological Society of America. Chair of the Long-term Studies Section, Ecological Society of America (2002-2005). Hosted NEON planning workshop on Biodiversity at Hastings in 2004, participated in CalEON and COREO planning workshops (2005).

Research- Plant Community Ecology of Grasslands
Grasslands are the most threatened ecosystems of North America, and California grasslands are the most diverse and rarest natural communities. I have pursued collaborative research of grassland animals and ecological analysis of the grasslands in Wyoming, Arizona and California. I am actively involved in basic research in restoration ecology in California grasslands. I am the lead editor for a multi-authored book on the ecology and management of California grasslands for the UC Press (2005-2006). I have lead or participated in workshops on California grassland ecology at the National Center for Ecological Analaysis and Synthesis. I am collaborating with several plant ecologists in long-term research on the changes in grasslands at Hastings, including soil microbial activity and carbon sequestration.
