Wire basket in soil, with about 6" above ground. Acorns are planted in basket. Tree tube (white plastic sheet, rolled into tube) covers seedling. Wire basket bent to keep mice and voles out. Wood post supports tree tube. Alternate is to install steel "t" posts on either side of tree tube.

Wire cover placed over top of tree tube to keep birds from falling in and getting trapped and perishing in the tube. Note pull-tie that is supposed to go around the wood stake.
