Checklists
of Hastings Invertebrates
After
Hastings was establishedin 1937, the resident zoologist, Jean Linsdale,
collected invertebrates with zeal. Specimens were sent across the country
for identification by experts. A relatively complete list of each group
(see below) was compiled and annotated through the 1950's. During the
1960's, lists of microscopic and parasitic animals were compiled by Betty
Davis and were similarly sent out for independent expert identification.
In 2003, the California Digital Library Project provided equipment to
convert our checklists to PDF format. Checklists were typed on yellow
paper, with a mamual typewriter with a cloth ribbon. Thus, optical character
recognition software simply would not work with these old sheets of paper.
However, we were able to do some OCR. All checklists were scanned and
are presented here as relatively large PDF files. A PDF version of each
checklist is kept on the Hastings website, and duplicate copies are kept
on the UC Digital Library Project servers. When possible, an OCR version
is on the UCDLP page. If the link on the UCDLP for OCR comes up blank,
it means OCR was not possible. Only PDF files are available in that case.

Insects and Invertebrates on Microscope Slides
During
the 1950s and 1960s, Betty Davis mounted small insects on microscope
slides. This collection is now housed at the Essig Museum, UC Berkeley.
Over 7,000 slides were prepared and are being curated. Click here for

This deserves
some explanation. In the 1940s and 1950s, biologists sampled gut contents
of various mammals at Hastings. These bits of chewed plants were cleaned,
rinsed clear and placed on microscope slides. A complete set of reference
slides were prepared and are stored at Hastings. These are slides of cleared
plant tissues- leaves, mostly, on microscope slides. Patterns of cleared
cell walls and shapes allow one to identify plants to species. A list
of all plants known to have been found in guts of several hundred small
mammals is presented in this checklist.
