Red House and in 2011,
the Red House Cabins
The Red House was built by the Hastings family in 1930 to house the teachers at the Carmel Valley Ranch School, in the School House, just below the Red House. A steep road up past the old School House to the Red House was replaced in 2001 with a chip-sealed access road along the side of the hill. The house had a wood fired stove for heat and a magnificent (original) lion-claw bathtub, etc. For a few photos of the old Red House, click here. In 2008, a grant from the state Wildlife Conservation Board with funds from Propostiion 84 and the National Science Foundation- Field Stations and Marine Lab Program, allowed us to replace the Red House with two new modular cabins. Cabins were built in a factory near Davis, CA by Valley Home Development. Foundations and a stem wall were installed and they were shipped here. A Hastings blog entry describes this installation. Valley Home Development specialize in getting small cabins into tight places. In 2011 we finally had authorization to finish the work. Sage Building Solutions (formerly Daniels and House) installed a deck and supervised the new driveway and parking areas. These are the only paved roads on Hastings. By August, the cabins were occupied. The cabins offer two bedrooms each, with a bunk bed that offers either a futon or double bed below, and a full size single bed above. Each cabin sleeps 4, with a kitchen, laundry, bathroom living room and dining area. They are handicapped acessible, fully sprinklered, with propane heat, softened water and a great view. Having additional small group housing units adds extremely useful options for Hastings housing. |
