Jimmie A. Bell, a longtime Carmel Valley rancher and member of a pioneering family in Big Sur, died Wednesday at Community Hospital after a brief illness. He was 68.

Born May 21, 1911, in Monterey, he was a rancher in Carmel Valley for more than 40 years and lived in the valley until his death. Also, he had worked as a senior maintenance man for the University of California on the Hastings Reservation in the valley and had been an official government weather observer for the valley more than 30 years. Jimie Bell worked as the Maintenance Worker at Hatings since August, 1958.

He is survived by his wife. Lois; brother, Benjamin H. Bell of Sacramento: sisters, Emily Fritcher of Lake County, Theresa Abrams Fitch of Seaside and Frances O'Hare of Oakdale, and many nieces and nephews. Another brother, John Bell of the Peninsula. died in 1933, and another sister. Rosemary Marotta, also of the Peninsula, died in 1960. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Monterey City Cesmetery.

notes: Lois Bell continued to live on the Bell Ranch, just east of Hastings, until she passed away in 2000. The Bell Ranch was later in escrow to become part of the Palo Escrito Ranch.
